Transient CO2 capture for open-cycle gas turbines in future energy systems

In complex electricity systems with a varied generation mix, the security of supply is important, and quick-response nature gas turbines invaluable in providing system flexibility. Accompanied post-combustion capture (PCC) CO2, can support transition to future low-carbon system. This study presents development validation dynamic rate-based model benchmark CO2 absorption process, using 30 wt% monoethanolamine (MEA). The scaled up from pilot-scale match flue output modern small-scale turbine operating open-cycle configuration. Simulations various flexible scenarios shows rapid transitioning between full partial load beneficial delivering higher time-averaged rates, compared Baseload scenario where PCC operated at for 5 h. Maintaining constant liquid/gas (L/G) ratio results 90.01% capture; however, this increases energy demand due reboiler steam flowrate. To compensate, flowrate also ramped, resulting small decrease duty scenario. Importantly, no negative or rate related issues highly-transient operation are found.
